Although we have implemented - together with our digital consulting partner WebSeed - a couple of sports news portals in a rather crowded Greek market, when we first heard about the new sports project from SKAI, we thought that differentiating from the rest of the existing portals would be a difficult task.

We had forgotten the most powerful component of this project: VIDEO.

Since the name of the project had not been defined, we ended up very quickly talking with the project team about a totally unconventional name closer to a Web 2.0+ property than a sports portal of an established media group. That's how we ended up with WOOP, a fresh, different name allowing enough space for verbal games and future extensions.

That's how www.woop.gr was born. Focusing on big live football and basketball events, covering "underserved" sports news like racing, sailing, surfing, kick-boxing and many more, specializing in rich media coverage using mainly video.

We designed and implemented an original, extremely dynamic Media Gallery section allowing site admins to bundle Photos, Podcasts and Videos in a single rich media gallery combound object. The user can filter dynamically Media Gallery results simply clicking and unclicking on Sports, Leagues, Teams, Players or free tags. Additionally the user can select a specific time period in order to limit the results and find what exactly he/she is looking for.

The portal is using AKAMAI CDN for html delivery as well as for live video and on demand streaming. Also for first time we used a new platform for video delivery which allows Pre and Post roll advertisements since Video ads are starting to become a necessity for the increasing number of Greek Web TV projects.

Woop.gr is based on Drupal CMS platform, since our team has gained significant experience and technical knowledge through the significant number of complex projects we have implemented so far.

We ran the project based on our continuously evolving implementation process, starting with requirements gathering and clarifications, defining features, designing wireframes and actual layouts, identifying content types and building core entities in Drupal, parameterizing views and CSS theming them accordingly in detail.

Currently we are monitoring and trimming the project, we had experienced some heavy traffic nights and we are in the process of implementing some very interesting features for woop.gr's next phase.
